Description
The Downeast Institute is a nonprofit organization that operates an experimental shellfish hatchery. This facility produces a variety of shellfish on a commercial scale to support public stock enhancement, applied research, and aquaculture development. We also operate a marine research laboratory, education center with ongoing programs and a demonstration oyster farm. Our facility is located on Great Wass Island in the town of Beals.
We have an immediate opening for a Shellfish Production Assistant to assist with microalgae stock and mass cultures, perform sanitation and preparation of shellfish production equipment and systems, assist with the spawning and rearing of shellfish and with field-based experiments, as well as other duties.
A B.S. in marine biology, marine ecology, aquaculture, zoology or related fields is preferred but not required. Required skills include computer proficiency, oral communication, and time and project management. Flexibility in scheduling, a strong work ethic and attention to detail are also required. This position will occasionally involve travel to field sites, therefore applicants must be willing to work outside in any safe weather conditions and have a valid Maine driver’s license. The applicant must also be able to lift 50 lbs and perform work while standing.
